Every European capital has a price frontier, a ring of quarters where independent houses hold rates the riverside addresses abandoned. This shelf walks the frontier: in Budapest it runs behind the grand boulevards of Pest, in Porto it begins one metro stop inland of the river crowds, in Athens it curls beneath the Acropolis in Koukaki.

Budget here never means careless. The notes check the window, the lift, the sound of the street at two in the morning and the exact fare from the airport, because a EUR 79 room that costs EUR 45 in taxis and twice that in bad dinners is not a budget room at all.
