Koukaki is the Athens answer the notebook keeps giving: a residential quarter under the west face of the Acropolis where small hotels hold doubles under EUR 95 and the evening paseo shares its tables with the neighbourhood.

Breakfast decides more hotel verdicts than the lobby ever will, so the notebook grades every table against five plain marks, from the wrapped cheese insult to the fried eggs of a proper Viennese buffet, and publishes the scale so the scores can be argued with.
Seaside Stays
Twenty five minutes west of San Sebastian, Zarautz keeps a two kilometre beach and a row of family pensions where doubles under EUR 100 hear the surf from the pillow, and the morning pintxo table makes the buffet sound silly.

The Porto that charges riverside prices ends at one metro stop inland: Cedofeita and Bonfim keep guesthouses and small hotels under EUR 80, granite streets included, and the walk down to the Douro takes ten minutes it is a pleasure to spend.

The middle finger of Halkidiki keeps the Greece of the notebook: pine down to the water, family guesthouses at Nikiti and Neos Marmaras under EUR 90 in June, and dinners where the fish is priced by the kilo and the family argues kindly about it.

The budget Vienna of travel myth does exist, and it lives in the seventh district: pensionen and small hotels in Neubau where doubles under EUR 120 come with courtyards, high ceilings and a ten minute walk to the museums.
